Heublein Tower via The Hazen Trail

The Hazen Trail is a less-known route up to the Heublein Tower.  If solitude is your thing, you won’t find many other hikers here, but you’ll pay for that solitude with a strenuous climb.  It’s not a very long trail, but the last third of it is about 800 feet straight up.

You can’t miss the trailhead, thanks to this prominent sign.  No mention of the tower though!

You won’t get too far down the trail before you see this jaunty lad.  The parks department in Simsbury is a little extra.  Whoever was putting these up must have pooped out pretty quickly though, because they peter out once the trail gets tough.

A nice little wooden walkway to get you most of the way through a swampy area.  Most of the way.

We’re into the meat of it now, and here’s a spot to rest!  But not for me, for I am wicked, and must soldier on.

Pretty darn near the top now.  Had I brought a wee dram with me, perhaps I would have sat a spell, but with heart beating like a kettle drum, I must press on.

I’ve made it to the top, and the view from up here isn’t half bad!

If you’re not careful, you might miss the tower.  Thankfully they have provided a sign.

And here she is, the beautiful Heublein Tower.  I recommend a visit some day when the tower is open.  You can climb up to the top and see for miles, including a great view of Hartford.

    1. We just took it and unless you’re fit and can manage lots of stones up steep ways you might want to enter the tower using the Rte 185 way. This write up is a bit optimistic!
