Number six on my list of small towns is Scotland, CT.
Located in Windham County, and incorporated in 1857, Scotland has a population of 1,576, making it the sixth smallest town in the state. Covering 18.61 square miles, it is also the smallest town by area that I have visited so far.
Scotland has two historic homes. One is the birthplace of Samuel Huntington, one of the signers of the declaration of independence, and the other is the Waldo House. The grounds of the Waldo House are where you can find the annual Highland Festival & Games, which take place in October.
There is no restaurant in Scotland, so I was unable to fulfill my blog commitment of having a meal in town. There is, however, The Vineyard at Hillyland, so I was at least able to visit a place of interest.
I will admit that there is some confusion in my mind about whether this vineyard is technically in Scotland or Windham. Their website says Windham, but on google maps (and every other map I have found) it appears to be squarely in Scotland. The borders and postal addresses of these small towns can be a little funny, from what I’ve seen. Because this blog post doesn’t really work unless it’s in Scotland, I’m going to say it’s in Scotland. In an effort to distract from the big Windham/Scotland controversy, here’s a picture of a huge…rooster next to the tasting room.
“Look! Chickens!” he says, waving his hands over the Windham/Scotland scandal.
They had a fire in 2017 that took out one of their main buildings. This is all that is left.
You can hardly tell from the front though! If they ever decide to sell the place, this is the picture they should use, although I doubt it would pass inspection. My friend Jairo included for scale. He complains that he looks like a gnome or a hobbit in this picture, but I assure you he is of approximately human-size and of nearly symmetrical proportions in real life. I think it has something to do with the size and shape of the door.
Once again, I forgot to take any pictures of the inside! I forgot at the last winery too! Luckily I was able to borrow one from my friend’s camera. It’s a cute little tasting room, in what was once a three-bay workshop for the farm. There is a spiral staircase leading up to a cozy loft area above.
Somebody needs to remind me to take more pictures.
They have a nice little outdoor seating area as well.
And that was my brief visit to the town of Scotland. Another great day in Connecticut!

It was hobbit, not gnome!
