The town of Morris is number 14 in my project to visit every town CT has to offer.
Established in 1859, Morris covers 17.19 square miles, and has a population of 2256. It is in Litchfield county, which I think of as the fancy part of the state, but Morris seems to be mostly farms from what I could tell.
As always seems to be the case, their path to townhood started with the building of a parish. They built theirs in 1767, and less than 100 years later, they broke off from Litchfield and went their own way.
The town was named for a Revolutionary War officer, James Morris.
Today I chose La Güera Cantina, and I was not disappointed. The proprietors got their start with a food truck, and now they have a physical location as well. They just opened recently, so they did not have any information about hours on their google search results. My good deed for the day was to correct the spelling of the restaurant in google’s search results, as well as to upload some pictures and to add their hours of operation.
It’s a cozy little place inside. The service is good, and the food was great. If I’m ever passing through Morris again, I definitely want to stop here! It may become a motorcycle destination for me.
I noticed the incongruous rowing shell up in the rafters, and I told my friend Jairo, “I’ll bet you anything that boat was up there when it was the prior establishment, and they just didn’t take it down.” Sure enough, when I searched the internet for The Barn, which is what it was before, there was the boat.
After we ate, we went up the road to see the Buddha Ariyamettaram Temple. My understanding is that this is a Laotian Buddhist temple. I remember riding past it one time when I was out in the middle of nowhere on my motorcycle, and thinking it was absolutely wild that there was an ornate temple on some back road in very rural Connecticut.
The monks don’t seem to mind if you come in and take a look around. It was a cool little place.
It was a fun way to spend a chilly Saturday in November, and another great day in Connecticut!
